Bird Box : Movie Research

  1. 1. What genre conventions were used?

In the popular Netflix film, Bird Box, a wide variety of filming conventions are used to encapsulate the horrifying plot. As there are many characters in the movie, shots like two-shot and three-shot can be shown. Dutch, high and low, and over the shoulder angles were also used throughout the film. The setting was widely shown through the multiple aerial shots that appeared various times. Close ups and panning camera movements can also be seen. As it relates to the plot, blindfolds were used in the costumes. Casual outfits like dresses, jeans, and t-shirts were displayed on the characters. Boots were used by the main character and her children when in the woods. The lightning in the movie has numerous shifts as daylight and nightlight was a main source of lightning. The acting was very emotional as a tragic event was taking place. The main character exuberates a confident attitude as she is trying to push through the horror which is wreaking havoc in her city. Natural makeup can be seen on the actors, but the focus was on special effect makeup like injuries and wounds on the actors' bodies.

  1. 2 What conventions were liked?

When watching this movie we enjoyed the special effects makeup, costumes, and lightning. As the costumes were natural and nothing over the top, the movie gained a more realistic touch, making the film more horrifying, seeming that it could happen in everyday life. The makeup artists did a wonderful job when creating all the wounds that can be seen on the actors. From the smallest drop of blood to a burn caused by a fire, the makeup is so realistic its crazy! Finally, while watching we noticed the many lightning shifts that took place. Even the simplest lightning change when the security camera footage appeared on screen made all the difference.

  1. 3. What conventions were disliked?

It was hard for us to pick out any conventions which we disliked but a few came to mind. Even though the genre is a thrilling horror, we felt that there was little action taking place. This may be due to lack of camera movement so in our film we will make sure we encapsulate the genre by adding more movement. Also, there was little creepy music which can be understandable considering the plot was focused more realistically speaking but we feel that using creepier vibed music would truly add to the horror.
